The only day to rain that week was Wednesday and like last year, the Gala Day went ahead and the impervious students played despite the weather. It wasn't all bad though. There were patches of sunshine for the players, teachers, spectators and volunteers alike who enjoyed the day thoroughly. 200 players from 10 schools reaching from Newcastle, Central Coast and back to Sydney competed in the senior's competition (yrs 9 to 12). The level of play is always impressive and this year was no different with standout team performances from Henry Kendall High School, Our Lady Of Mercy College, Merewether High School and Chatswood High School. It was great to see new teams from Patrician Brothers College, Asquith Girls High School and Sydney Girls High School who have shown great potential for the future.

It is a jammed packed day with games being played from the moment the kids arrive at the ground until the very last moment before the award presentations. Such a successful day is to be attributed to the generous support of St. John Ambulance, teachers and parents of the players and mostly, the volunteers who give a whole day to assist. The NSW Frisbee players are always happy to lend a hand at the adult events but it is fantastic to have their support for younger players. It is their diligence that was rewarded by a thank you letter from the Croquet Club (whose grounds we were using) thanking us for the courteousness, efficiency and cleanliness with which the day was run.
The results on the day were eventful in that both divisions saw teams who have competed in the past, showing much improved skill and class on the field. Merewether High Girls and Our Lady of Mercy College came close to winning last years junior division and were pleased to have another chance to win this year. Both teams stood out during the round games as very dominant but it was Merewether with the support of family and fans that took them to victory! In the boys division there was tight competition throughout the day, the top 4 teams Henry Kendall 1, Greystanes, Chatswood 1 and North Sydney 1, each with some top players, a lot of athleticism and the competitive spirit. It came down to Greystanes High vs Henry Kendall in the final and although it was close for the first half, Henry Kendall proved to be stronger in the end. Special recognition must go to Henry Kendall High School who took home the Spirit in both the boys and girls divisions.
The NSW All School Merit team is a team comprised of players who showed exceptional ability on the day. It is a honorary mixed team selected by the NSW experienced players who attended.
The NSW High Schools Junior Gala Day is to be held in September and hopes to be another success for the younger players (yrs 7 - 9). Congratulations to all the players who attended for their outstanding performances and we hope to see you again next year!
